ca. 1917-1919
A standard German defensive egg-shaped hand grenade fitted with a 4.5-second friction fuse and a pre-fragmented central band. Prior to inserting the fuse, the copper plug had to be removed. The Model 17 Eierhandgranate (literally "egg grenade") was considered easier to carry than other types of grenade because of its shape and light weight. Germany later introduced a similar model, the Model 39 grenade, during the Second World War.
